I was planning a white and black kitchen but it connected to our family room and my husband doesn’t want to paint the red brick fireplace. Would a white and navy kitchen look better idea?

I struggle with SAD and no bright overheads sinks me into deeper depression. At night time, before bed, I turn off the overheads to make me sleepy. But otherwise, all lamps are on – all lamps (and I have a lot!), all wall lights, all string lights, all fake candles, all overheads. I cannot have enough light!!!

Personally, I’m team both. I like the practicality of having a fairly bright light (but not so bright that I am unable to even glance at it) in the ceiling, coupled with the ambience from a lamp. Additionally, some of the overhead lights I’ve found to be insufficient, so we added some lamps to give the overhead a boost. If we want a more moody (but not dreary*) lighting, we can also turn the overheads off in those rooms. I love having that degree of flexibility (although I’m still not going to be installing dimmers).

Additionally, some rooms are very impractical to use a lamp in. I don’t think anyone would be using one in their bathroom, for example (unless it, for whatever reason, didn’t come with its own lights). In the garage, lamps are best reserved for task- and video-lighting (I do some vlogs from there). In our kitchen, because it’s so small (and we constantly use so much counter space, which lines the whole wall), there’s no place to put a lamp (which sucks, as that’s one of the rooms where the overhead lighting is horrendously insufficient).

What if the kitchen you described already had a nice looking Jacobean commercial grade laminate floor throughout the rest of the house? If that couldn’t be matched, would a hexagon porcelain tile add a nice contrast in the kitchen and powder room? What color tile would you choose for the pictured kitchen?

Love the complex creams! Question for you: What colors do you recommend for trim and ceilings to go with cream walls? Would you use the same color for all three but in different sheens? Or a neutral white? I’m assuming flat sheen for the ceiling, eggshell for walls, and semi gloss for the trim – same color for all three, or same for the trim and ceilings with a different wall color, or all different? Thank you!!

Consider black soapstone countertops. I love mine. They look great with white cabinets, they function really well, and the look is softer than black granite or black quartz.

Makeovers are a weekly delight. Informative and inspirational. Have started visiting the local Homegoods store because of them. My only question is how do you get the space to set all your purchases up in the store the way you do? Ours is packed with people and aisles are always crowded. The floor personel are not too receptive when it comes to blocking the flow or moving the larger pieces around the store.

Looks great! What size bedding did you use to cover the entire mattress to the floor and where did you ultimately find the rug? Have you ever shopped at At Home? That store is so much larger than most Home Goods. Seems more similar to Home Sense?
